In terms of our chat room and social network, all we ask is that the conversations stay within the realm of mesothelioma and related topics.
You may ask, what is the underlining reason for producing this small site? The following is a short version of my story, which should explain why this small site was produced.
My wife has been fighting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
for 13 years. Her cancer is starting to pick up pace with remissions becoming shorter and shorter in duration. But with new cutting edge treatments such as stem cell transplant, she has a chance of surviving her cancer and beating it once and for all. To provide her with a certain degree of hope, I searched the Internet for inspirational stories of cancer survival. In my search I came across mesothelioma cancer.
Mesothelioma is one of the most devastating cancers I have come across. The typical time course for this disease from diagnosis to death is approximately 24 months. What really bothered me about this disease is that it is 100% preventable.
Mesothelioma cancer is caused by asbestos. The disease can develop 20 to 30 years after exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a strong and incombustible fiber widely used in the past for fireproofing and insulation. The small fibers of asbestos are easily inhaled or swallowed. Asbestos is not only the causative agent for mesothelioma cancer, it is also the causative agent for asbestosis, a chronic disease of the lungs.
Asbestos is a fibrous silicate mineral. It was very popular in manufacturing and industry due to its strength and thermal stability. What really bothered me while reading about mesothelioma was that companies that used this product for whatever reason, allowed their employees to be exposed to it even when they new that it could be hazardous to their health.
I have always felt that there is to many lawsuits going on in the United States. People are suing other people or companies for frivolous reasons. In the United States there is an army of ambulance chasing lawyers, ready to take on just about any case if they feel it can make them money. Mesothelioma cancer is different. In the case of mesothelioma cancer, the plaintiff has a clear and viable right to sue.
Mesothelioma patients have a right to sue and they should do so. But the most important aspect from the patient’s perspective is, can I survive this disease. Obviously survival is the highest priority.
Three things are needed for the survival of any cancer. 1) Proper medical care and breakthrough treatments for the disease. 2) A positive attitude. 3) A Religious Foundation. This mini site is about number two. A positive attitude.
What produces a positive attitude? This brings me back to my original point. A positive attitude, also referred to as hope, is created when the individual learns that other people are beating this disease.
This is why I have created this site. I wanted to present to the mesothelioma cancer patient stories of hope. People are surviving mesothelioma, and if you contracted this disease, you to can survive. You need to make up your mind that you are going to fight it with every ounce of energy that you have. Remember this, every type of cancer known to man has it’s survivors (including mesothelioma).
So what I have provided here is a listing of inspirational stories, which I have shared with my wife. I hope from a psychological perspective, these stories provide a benefit to the mesothelioma cancer patient. Remember that God sometimes allows us to have disease in order to shape and mold us into the person he wants us to become.
Many mesothelioma cancer patients have beat the odds. My wife was supposed to live only 6 years with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It has been 13 years since she received her diagnosis and she is currently living a full, productive life.
One of the most widely known stories of cancer survival is the story of Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong was given a 40% chance of surviving testicular cancer. He not only survived, he flourished. After beating his cancer, he won the prestigious Tour de France an unprecedented seven straight times, from 1999-2005.
The Tour de France is the most prestigious cycling race in the world, and one of the most grueling events in all of sports. What is really interesting about the Lance Armstrong story is that Lance has stated that he could have never achieved what he did in cycling if he did not have cancer.
Lance Armstrong has become a beacon of hope for all cancer patients. God does shape and mold us into the person he wants us to be by using disease. Read the following stories. I hope they create a positive attitude in you. This positive attitude is necessary for your survival. Remember this, there are a lot of “terminal” people alive, healthy and cancer free. Remember, there are many people living today who have survived cancer against all odds. There is no type of cancer for which there is no treatment.
